Happy Father's Day

Father’s Day is a beautiful celebration that acknowledges and appreciates the important role played by a father in raising a child and consequently building a stronger society. It started in the early 20th century to complement Mother's Day.
Father’s Day is celebrated the world over. It is said to have originated in America. The first Father’s Day was celebrated on 19th June 1910 in Spokane, Washington, USA. The idea of celebrating Father’s Day came from Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd who thought of the idea while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Her father, William Jackson Smart, whom she loved dearly, had brought up six children on his own and she wanted him to know how much he meant to her. As her father was born in the month of June she decided that it was the best time to celebrate father’s day.
To all the Great Dads at TOYSHARE, we wish you a very Happy Father’s Day!

What fun roleplay is!

There are times when children speak and do exactly like they were the cheeky engine Thomas, or the show off Lightning Mcqueen or the adventurous Dora, transformers, and some other super hero/heroine characters. They also pretend play like mommy - daddy, teacher - student, police and robber, and anything that fancies them at that point. Lets face it even we used to pretend play!

There have been studies conducted continuously on the benefits and general effects of roleplay. This particular article from psychologytoday.com(below link) has illustrated on the pros of pretend play. It says that pretend play allows the expression of both positive and negative feelings, cognitive flexibility meaning how they think, imagine and learn and creativity.

Children usually pretend play when they have seen or heard of certain situations, stories etc. This lets them imagine more and make them want to pretend. They pretend to cook, clean and help in the kitchen, pretend to be doctors, or pilots or truck drivers, etc.

Nowadays most of the preschools have pretend play toys and teachers encourage them to play assuming different roles. Usually at school teachers also explain different roles and guide them into enacting those roles. The best part is they get to assume various roles and learn different things each time. At home, it definitely is always left to them and their favourite roles. Its good as long as they don't get bored. Probably introducing new books and   telling them stories will stimulate their imagination.

Of course kids need to have a lot of physical activity and challenging activities, but roleplay is also important part of their growing up.

World Environment Day for kids

After watching the movie "An Inconvenient Truth" by "Al Gore", I was quite affected, as others and maybe followed some of suggestions for a while (Except that we now have got used to CFL bulbs) and then it kind of faded off.

We definitely want the world to be safe, moreover for our children and their children to have a beautiful world to live in. What we do today is going to affect our children.

World Environment Day is celebrated June 5 to create awareness of the environment. A day to promote caring for our planet, Earth. Perhaps just a day is not enough, it should become a habit or rather a way of life to do things eco-friendly way, so our kids also inculcate the same values.

Simple things like, never keep the tap water running, while brushing your teeth or switching off lights when you are leaving a room or reuse paper at home or perhaps take a 5-10 mins walk to the nearby store than your vehicle.. hmmm with the petrol prices sky-rocketing thats definitely a good option :)

Well, you can share any such habits you follow or intend to follow with your lil ones.

Here are also some fun activities to introduce some environmental concepts to the young

Fun way to introduce the water-cycle -

Some toys/books/puzzles in library on environment..

may be we should add some more to our collection :)

Its really become imperative that our kids realise the importance of environmental conservation. Thanks for taking a tiny step towards it, by opting for a toy library and promoting reuse of plastic.

A mom's breakfast dilemma

Whats for breakfast?

At 9:00 am: Elder son is still sleeping, well its Sunday morning! He wakes up usually at 7:45-8:00 am on other days. Today its till 10:00 am. Younger son is all up and crawling about, has had his bath too and ready to eat anything? Yes, even the lonely ladybird that happened to lie on the floor this morning!
Anyway by the time I went to him I got the black spots on red shells out of his mouth, I am hoping that was all there was in it.
At 10:00 am: Younger son ate little bit of mixed grain cereal and chewed on some puffed grains, he was too full I suppose with his early catch.
Elder son is up and still not brushed his teeth and is playing with his new toy from yesterday. Breakfast is ready, anything he wants, waffles, bread and cheese or cereal, but no he is now busy with his rainforest puzzle that he has to crack before doing anything else.
Its Sunday morning, guess I have to take it easy!
Share your Sunday morning with us.....
